Berry's Beach, Phillip Island
This site is closed. 2003: Threat to Mutton Bird burrows
Ideal paragliding site. Barry's Beach consists of a mixed bag of grassy sand dunes and sandstone cliffs on the South side of Phillip Island. The Western end dunes are fairly steep, about 20m, 60 ft high and takeoffs can be made here in a S to SW wind.
Takeoff
Park in the carpark and walk along the cliff top to the left to the grassy bowl.
Landing
Landings can be made on top with ease, but watch out for fences.
Flight
Flying the Eastern end means crossing a fairly large gap, and then flying downwind get onto the grassy slopes past the gap. The slopes increase in height and steepness until the Red Bluff is reached at the Eastern tip of the bay. The cliffs at the Western tip of the bay can be flown in an ESE wind, but the beat is limited. Hutchinsons Beach to the West is a horse shoe shaped bay with 90m, 150 ft cliffs. It can be flown in SSE to SSW winds of up to 20 knots. The take off is on private land which can only be approached by walking along the cliff edge from the Barrys Beach car park - about 1 km. Some enterprising flyers have managed to fly from Barrys Beach to Hutchinsons, but it can be very tricky.
Hazards/Comments
Hazards include turbulence over the gaps, people on the beach, "Death Valley", ( a patch of turbulence on the way to Red Bluff), electric fences and mutton bird burrows.
